I got to read it ages ago, what with being a mod and all. So ive had time to read it a few times and I must admit that Drew did a great job. The episode takes a completely surprising direction and that could have failed but Drew turned it out perfectly.

Have to say I loved it to. It's very Angel-like. Yeah I know but sometimes people can write something that loses the point of the characters. I have sometimes.
I used to think Season 6 would be hard to pull off after the ending of Not Fade Away. Can't wait to see how this pans out.

Just read "Winning..." holy @#$
Amazing writing, I can honestly say it dramatically raises the bar for the rest of us poor souls who have to write in its wake!
One question though: Near the beginning of the episode, Angel says he doesn't drink any blood. Um, did I miss something, cuz I thought he drank blood all the time; hell, Harmony was warming it up in the microwave for him!

What Angel meant to say - if he weren't surrounded by creepy demon slaves or suffering from multiple sword wounds or the mental anguish of having had three of his friends killed - was "anybody or any demon's blood".
Or he might be suffering memory loss - hmmm, I see an interesting new arc for his character.

My thoughts on "Winning" ;D ;D ;D
If the rest of the episodes are this good it will make the loss of the 6th season on TV easier to live with.
Thanks for a great read.

Just came across your Virtual Seaon 6 - and I have to say.....AMAZING!!!!!! It has certainly filled the void caused by Angel's cancellation. No new show out there captures my attention and dedication the way Angel did. But now, thanks to you, I can continue my obsession.
My hats off to you and yours for writing a gripping first episode. Joss himself, I think would be proud. I always wondered how the fight would end - now I know.......
Until next time,

What I liked about ‘Winning’
I liked the feel that it had been written by the creative team of Mutant Enemy and was true to the storyline of the Angelverse. I liked the idea of Angel, Spike and Illyria starting a new chapter and story at the demon shelter (possibilities for a load of plots, I’m sure you folks have already discussed them). The introduction of the episode-big-bad and the surprise ending at the end of the episode having him surrender before Angel (really solidifying the idea that Angel might have really won this time). The philosophy behind the fact that creatures with ‘souls’ are not always good and that non-souled creatures are always bad (not that I agree of disagree with either of the statements, I just liked how it came up).
What I disliked about ‘Winning’
I hope you don’t mind but I will post what I will try and make constructive criticism as well. First and foremost, Tobit. I think the biggest problem is, I can’t visualize him and because of that, he comes off as really annoying. The way in which Tobit communicates with the Powers that Be is really, really confusing too me, also do to the fact that this I can’t visualize it.
Best ‘Quotage’ from ‘Winning’
SPIKE I hear ya, mate. That dragon did a number on my ribs before I finally killed it.
Angel furrows his brow.
ANGEL The dragon? SPIKE Yeah. You remember. Big thing. Large wings. Bit of a toasty fella. ANGEL I killed the dragon, Spike. SPIKE (guffaws) Did not! Sorry to break the news to you, Angel- ANGEL (voice rising) I got him in the heart, Spike. I swung an ax into his heart! SPIKE It was a she! And I got ‘er in the brain, next to the mouth, with all the fire and the burning! ANGEL Did you see all the blood? I was drenched in blood! SPIKE (innocently) I’m sorry, I must’ve missed it. I was too busy KILLING THE BLEEDING DRAGON!
Overall Opinion
I have too admit, I am now hooked to FUWB and this virtual season of Angel. I’ve read several virtual seasons (or started too anyways) and they’re all mostly really lame, unoriginal plots and untrue too the characters. There seems to be some minor kinks that could be worked out but you have one more viewer now in the form of YoungGun (me!). Take care, good job and I look forward to reading the next installment of the New Adventures of the Fang Gang!

Wow, cool. Glad you're hooked. Hope we can keep you that way.
And please DO post constructive criticism - everyone. We can take it...usually with a minimum of tears.

Well guys you did it! It's been a while since I've been here (my computer crashed adn I finally got it up and running) and I really wish I could have been of more help. I was here in the beginning with some ideas then BAM computer crashes. Anyway I loved the episode! I'm really feeling it and I hope it stays just as good the whole run of it. The way it was written made me really be able to see what what was going on and wish that I was watching it on the TV. Like I said above I haven't been much help in months but if you guys need any help (as if you need it) I'm right here for ya. Can't wait for the next episode! "The good fight, yeah?"

As a writer myself, and especially as one involved with another Angel Season Six, I was very, very impressed by this.
You see too many Virtual Series that are poorly formatted, amateurish efforts that show promise, but just can't pull the pieces together. 'Winning' was a well, written, excellently paced piece of TV that showed a great understanding of the characters and also dealt with the aftermath of 'Not Fade Away's battle in an intelligent way.
So good work! I hope our two sites can link up because our take on things is quite different to yours, and it'll be interesting to see how our two seasons develop ^_^

Hi there
I popped over from Monster Zero's spot. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this. You have all the character's voices down pat, and my own healthy obsession with Firefly allowed me to really "see" Tobbit. Well done.
Thanks for the read.

I really dig this and I'm hooked. You've really adapted to the way people spoke on the show, especially Spike. These weren't at all weak recreations of real characters; these were characters I know and love.
I'll give a bit of constructive citicism: it drags a little when you've got one guy explaining everything. As much as I think that Tobit is an adequate addition, I like it better when the gang is finding stuff out for themselves, and I would have preferred more dialogue between the people we knew already, and less one guy talking at everyone else.

my mate Ian calls scenes like that 'carnage exposition' - a lot explained in a short time.
kind of like that awful scene in Angel Season Four when Skip The Demon tried to suggest that the past four years of the show had all been leading towards the Jasmine thing..
i mean, Tobit's stuff wasn't bad, I'm just using that as an example!

Winning was really good.
Is it just me or does anyone else sort of see similarities between the way Ilyria acts and the way Anya in buffy sometimes acted? ie with regards to the way she just kindof says things without really thinking too much about how other people will react. I find it frikkin hilarious and I'm glad to see that that aspect of her has been carried on into the writing of Winning.

Something that wasn't addressed in this episode, but I think bears consideration, is the fact that for all intents and purposes all three of our main cast are immortal.
What a long, strange trip it's been...

Fantastic. This captured the spirit of the show perfectly and is leaps and bounds ahead of the other attempts I've had the misfortune to read. The only real problems I had was the aforementioned "I don't drink any blood" line and Gunn's severed hand felt a bit too b-movie-ish, but other than those two things I have no real gripes on this episode. Nice episode title btw.

Not that your writing was bad, Drew. But something just seemed to be missing. And I'm not saying that you did a bad job. But for me, the story just seemed to be lacking.
Other than that, I only had two major problems. When I started reading this, I expected it to pick up right where the series ended. I was hoping to read about the actual fight. I didn't think you'd start after. Of course I can't really anything bad about that, it's just not what I expected. The other problem was when Angel said that they won. I just don't see Angel losing two of his closest friends in a fight, and then saying that he won.
Other than that, though, I think you did an overall good job.
