ARC II EP:
Tobit is getting a bunch of missions from the Powers. Angel just blindly goes on these missions. Meanwhile, kids and other demons are disappearing from the Shelter (and maybe the streets). They ask Angel if he knows where they are. He just brushes them off, as he heads off for another mission, saying he’s sure they will turn up.
The others, seeing that Angel is ignoring this, take it upon themselves to investigate.
Turns out, someone with the power to pursuade people who have no hope, is drafting these demons into an army. He/She gets Angel this very way. As they march off to war, Spike and the others try to stop them. They are able to break the spell or whatever on everyone, except Angel is the last to be broken from it. He is so hopeless that he clings to this order in his life.
This ep should highlight how Angel is just following orders, he’s in a rut, a set path, and they’ll have to move heaven and earth to break him out of it.
This may work for "The Old Vampire and the Sea" episode, but it would probably be another, perhaps episode 12 or 13.
Rough Outline:
TEASER:
1) Angel on a mission from The Powers. He does it, no questions asked.
2) Angel returns to the Shelter. A demon stops him, asking him if he’s had a chance to look into his work problem (or something). Angel says, “No. Sorry. Been busy.” “But I can’t get any work-,” starts the demon, and Angel cuts him off: “Listen, my shift’s over, the sun’s almost up. I need to get some sleep.”
3) The Common Area is dark in the early hours of the morning. The demon who talked to Angel sits in front of the TV, not really watching, just looking at the floor, hopelessly. Saul sits at his post. A demon we do not see fromthe chest up walks in. It moves to the hopeless demon and puts a hand on his shoulder. The demon looks up at the stranger. A set of blindingly white teeth say, “We want you.” Then laughs a creepy little laugh.
ACT I:
It comes to Tobit’s attention that demons are disappearing.
Tobit keeps Angel preoccupied with the PTB missions because it distracts Angel from greater evils that are going on. But Spike, Illyria, and Andrew pick up on it and investigate.
Act break: Spike, Illy, and Andrew discover that the demons are being recruited for a war.
ACT II:
Stuff happens. More Angel on missions.
The others try to tell him what is happening, but he just tells them exhaustedly that he’s really swamped with work right now - “you know, helping the hopeless.” Spike: “And what about these blokes?” “They signed up, Spike. Their choice!”
Angel is at his desk when a demon comes up to him. “What is it?” he asks. Teeth flash white in a big smile. “We need your help, Mr. Angel.”
Act Break: S, I, A check out the training ground again (or wherever) and they spot Angel among the ranks.
ACT III:
I’m not sure where this war or battle will take place. The Act Three break should be pretty cool, but I don’t know what it would be yet.
ACT IV:
S, I, A find a way to break the spell, but even after it is broken Angel keeps fighting in the war.
Spike has to step up and stop him. He hits Angel.
Angel: I have to fight this war, Spike!
Spike: You don’t even know why you’re fighting!
(beat)
Angel: It doesn’t matter.
Spike: It’s all that matters! The reason! Not how you fight, why you fight!
Angel: This is my life now, Spike. I fight, and I do good. It’s that simple.
At the end of the episode, they are all back in the Shelter. Tobit comes to him with another mission from the Powers. Angel start to head out on it, and Spike grabs his arm and looks fiercely into Angel’s eyes. Angel just stares dully back at him, then breaks free and heads out.
